Joomla 6.2.0, codenamed “Mwezi”, was released on 13 October 2026. If your site is still running Joomla 5.4, this is the release to plan for. It brings a smoother editing experience and useful improvements — but as with any major-version move, the way you upgrade matters more than the version itself.
What’s new in 6.2
The TinyMCE editor has been upgraded, so writing and formatting articles feels more modern and reliable. Article image controls are improved, giving you better handling of featured and intro images. The login module gains more options, so the sign-in block can be tuned to fit your site.
The safe upgrade path from 5.4
Do not click update on your live site. Follow this order instead. First, back up everything — files and database — and keep a copy you can restore from. Second, copy the site to a staging environment, a subdomain or a separate folder. Third, install the Backward Compatibility 6 plugin. Joomla 6 needs it for a smooth move from 5.4, because some older extensions and code rely on behaviour that changed in version 6. Fourth, run the update on staging first, then test: the homepage and article pages, login, contact forms, search, and every extension you depend on. Fifth, only when staging is clean, repeat the same steps on the live site — starting from a fresh backup.
Why staging first? Because if an extension breaks, it breaks on the copy — not in front of your visitors. Fix it there, then go live with confidence.
If you’d like a second pair of eyes before you upgrade, start with a free site check and I’ll look at your version, extensions and PHP setup first.
